      <image:title>Arturo Sandoval /en/ - Arturo Sandoval</image:title>
<image:caption>Arturo Sandoval is the founding director of the Center of Southwest Culture, Inc. Arturo has dedicated his life to civil rights, economic justice, human rights, educational parity and conservation work. He was on the national organizing team for the first-ever Earth Day in 1970 in Washington, DC. There, he was charged with organizing events in the Western US. He was active in the Chicano Student Movement and the Chicano Civil Rights Movement beginning in 1967. He was a Vietnam War Resistor, who refused induction into the US Army in 1970 as a protest against the war’s immorality and illegality and was subsequently indicted, tried and convicted for refusing service. He has been active for six decades in community-based economic development, cultural, environmental, educational and civil rights efforts in New Mexico and across the US. Prior to his work with the Center, Arturo founded and ran a successful communications and organizational development consulting business, with clients across the US, in the Caribbean, in México and in Central America. He also had a successful 15-year career in journalism and communications. In that capacity, he won numerous awards and had his work published nationally and internationally. He is a native of Española, a village in northern New Mexico, and has lived most of his adult life in Albuquerque.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Marco Sandoval directs the Center’s Story Riders program, and assists in program development, implementation and translation for the Center’s other projects. As a child he spent his time with family in Chihuahua, Mexico, northern New Mexico, and la Plaza Vieja de Albuquerque, which fostered an appreciation for his mestizo heritage. Having developed a reverence for his mixed culture and a deep connection to place, he saw the need for a program that does the same for children in a world that increasingly values cultural homogenization and natural and human exploitation. Marco has worked as a bilingual educator and mentor to children and youth for more than ten years in various programs and institutions in Albuquerque. Marco is a musician and enjoys spending time with his two children, two cats, his dog, and being outside.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sarah Dewey /en/ - Sarah Dewey</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah Dewey is the Grants Manager and Visual Media Creator at the Center of Southwest Culture, where she combines her expertise in non-profit administration with her creative skills to support local programs. Sarah is dedicated to securing new funding opportunities, coordinating grant proposals and reports, and enhancing CSC's branding and visual identity. With a passion for culturally-grounded initiatives, she works to expand opportunities for New Mexico’s youth and families through high-quality, impactful programs. Growing up in the South Valley and earning a BFA in Art Studio from the University of New Mexico, Sarah's journey in arts education and community service began with a work study job at Harwood Art Center. Inspired by her mentor, she spent over a decade teaching visual art to underserved youth and families. Realizing that sustainable funding was critical to the survival of these programs, she turned her attention to grant writing and non-profit management. Sarah’s astute skills in program development and planning have been instrumental in securing funding for impactful initiatives like CSC’s Story Riders program. Beyond her work at CSC, Sarah is a multi-talented entrepreneur and artist. She owns FollowMamaMoon, where she creates hand-screen-printed moon calendars on textiles, and works as a grant writer for other nonprofits. A lover of sustainability, she also balances her professional life with gardening, crafting, and caring for her two-year-old son.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Director James Povijua began his career as a print journalist at The Santa Fe New Mexican and earned an Associated Press award for Investigative Journalism for his coverage of Native American education in New Mexico. James has an extensive background in community and labor union organizing. In Illinois, as Campaign Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, he led a years long state-wide campaign to pass the “Illinois Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.” The legislation extended basic labor protections to domestic work—a profession that is predominantly made up of women and women of color. The bill was signed into law in 2017 and domestic workers are now protected by the state’s: Minimum Wage Law, One Day Rest in Seven Act, Wages of Women and Minors Act, and Human Rights Act. Later, as Coordinator of Community Organizing at SEIU Local 1—among the nation’s largest unions—he organized a diverse citywide coalition in Chicago to support a city ordinance that created a pathway for low-wage workers organizing at O'Hare International Airport to win their union. Currently, James is the Policy Director for the Center for Civic Policy (CCP), a 501C3 advocacy organization focused on fostering broad, inclusive civic engagement among New Mexico’s diverse and underrepresented communities, through policy work, voter engagement, and issue education campaigns. At CCP, James supports the policy and advocacy initiatives of more than 40 partner organizations, whose issue areas include: inclusive democracy, immigrant rights, early childhood education, workers’ rights, reproductive justice, economic justice, the environment and climate equity. James grew up in Los Pachecos, NM and holds a BA in Industrial Labor Relations from Goddard College, VT.
