The Story Riders program advances racial justice and equity in outdoor recreation by shifting resources to, building agency with, and centering the leadership of Indigenous and Mexicano/Chicano peoples through helping to develop comprehensive cycling infrastructure and high quality programming throughout the state.
For over seven years, Story Riders has offered everything from in-school bike education to Spanish-language cycling intensives for women (through our Adelitas program) and youth-led community rides citywide. We’re proud to be the ONLY organization in New Mexico providing consistent, bilingual bike safety and mechanics education.
Story Riders addresses systemic health disparities in Indigenous and Latino communities by increasing access to physical activity, outdoor engagement, and culturally grounded health education. Cycling is a low-cost, accessible form of movement that supports cardiovascular, mental, and emotional well-being — yet many of our communities face significant barriers to participation, including lack of equipment, safe infrastructure, and culturally responsive programs.
We meet these challenges through a three-tiered model:
Bici (Bike): Participants receive a bike and helmet to keep, learn bike safety, and gain basic mechanics skills.
Bosque (Nature): Rides incorporate ecology, land-based knowledge, and traditional healing shared by local educators and cultural bearers.
Belonging: Cultural storytelling, art, and intergenerational learning help affirm identity and strengthen community connection.
We provide high-quality programs to youth and adults in Albuquerque and the surrounding area, help develop cycling infrastructure around the state (mechanics training, program development, bike shops!) and partner with local organizations to develop ongoing cycling activities.
All the bikes in our programs are donated by community members and refurbished by staff and volunteers to the highest safety standard. We’re currently gearing up to develop more bike infrastructure, so are accepting materials we can use in bike shops (2x4s, bike racks, tools, etc). Thank you!
